In 1759, Auchincruive Estate was bought by Richard Oswald, a London merchant, and son of the parish minister at Dunnet, in Caithness and the Patronage of the church went with the sale. In 1765 he presented to the church beautiful silver Communion-ware, still in use today.  (Not stored in the church.)

Richard Oswald in 1767 oversaw the second restoration. He had built the Auchincruive Gallery and the underlying burial vault. The church was "repaired, uniformly seated, and plastered by the heritors; and a new aile built by the Patron"

(I am indebted to the Rev Gerald Jones for the following information on the Oswalds of Auchicruive and their links with the Kennedys of Culzean. Ed)

Richard Alexander Oswald (1771-1841)

Richard Alexander Oswald, son of the above, was born in1771. He was married twice: firstly to Louisa Johnson, and secondly to Lady Lilias Montgomerie, daughter of the Earl of Eglinton. He had a son, Richard Oswald, younger of Auchincruive (1797-1834) by his first wife.

Richard Oswald, younger of Auchincruive (1797-1834)

This Richard married Lady Mary Kennedy (1799-1866) at Culzean Castle on 10th December 1833. She was a daughter of Archibald Kennedy, 1st Marquess of Ailsa and 17th Earl of Cassilis. Her cousin, John Kennedy, who died in 1845, was the great-grandfather of Sir Ludovic Kennedy (1919-2009) the well-known author and broadcaster The present Marquess Lord David Kennedy is an Elder and Treasurer at Kirkmichael Church.

Margaret Dundas Oswald

Margaret Dundas Oswald (1818 - 1891)

Margaret Dundas Oswald was Richard, younger of Auchincruive's sister. She was the grad-daughter of either George Oswald of Scotstoun, Glasgow or Alexander Oswald, MP, Shieldhall, Glasgow and his wife Margaret Dundas.  (more research needed! Ed)

Margaret Dundas was the daughter of John Dundas and Agnes Haldane and her brother was Alexander Haldane Oswald, MP, of Auchincruive.
