Some thoughts for this New YearNow that we are settling in to the new year some folk start to look forward to longer days of daylight and warmer weather! Last week I sat down to plan our summer holiday. We usually go to France and travel by car so there are many different bookings to make. When I had finished I opened up my Bible to consider what I might use as a theme for Sunday. I happened to open the Bible at James 3 : 13 and read this ‘Now listen to me, you that say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to a certain city, where we will stay a year and go into business and make a lot of money.” You don't even know what your life tomorrow will be! You are like a puff of smoke, which appears for a moment and then disappears. What you should say is this: “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.” In Latin that means Deo valente: God willing. Too often we take tomorrow for granted! Because of the uncertainty of tomorrow there are two things at least that we ought to do without delay. 1.Be right with God. He wants a close relationship with us now. All our tomorrows are safe in his hands when we trust him for what tomorrow may bring. It is impossible to put into words the contentment that that kind of trust in God can bring! 2.Be right with other people. When we have had a quarrel or spoken a nasty word or pushed an argument to the extent that we have lost a friend we often think, ‘I'll sort it out tomorrow’. Don't leave it to tomorrow for you may not have the opportunity to sort it out. Sort it out now. Everything we do or plan in life should be prefixed by God willing! Deo Valente! These are the fabulous pin cushions that the ladies made on their first day at The Sewing Corner. Fancy coming along? A Pen from Ken.A New Year Message
Many say they don't like New Year ! This is because at the end of a year we tend to look back! When we do this we don't always like what we see! A missed opportunity! A relationship gone wrong! A job lost! An almost unbearable bereavement! I'm sure you could extend this list! We are also sometimes afraid to look forward too much into what a new year might bring! Illness! Loneliness! Family problems! So it isn't surprising that many folk don't like New Year! When we're happy we only wish things could stay like that and not change! None of us are particularly happy with most changes in life! And then we read from the New Testament in Hebrews 13 verse 8 that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and for ever! Changeless? How can this possibly be true? Well for a start Jesus shows us clearly what God is really like! Loving, caring, forgiving supporting! He didn't only TELL us this! He SHOWED us this by the way he lived and the things he did. So Jesus revealed the true nature of God to us. But he did even more! He showed us what KIND of people we were designed to be. Through his lovely life Jesus has shown us what we can be if only we will trust him and follow him! So when I ask, How should I behave? The answer is, Behave like Jesus! Or, How should I treat other people? The answer is, Treat them as Jesus would ! Perhaps I might ask, How can I face up to the temptations and challenges that this New Year may bring? The answer is, Treat then in the way Jesus would , trusting God for his support and faithfulness. So Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever to all generations of people because he is the supreme definition and revelation of God and at the same time he is the perfect example of what people can be and were meant to be when God made them. Are you fed up with all the changes and fears in your life? Then why not turn to the one who is the same, yesterday, today and for ever ? He WILL support you! He WILL go with you through every hour and every day of this coming year! Hold on to the changeless one! Have a very happy 2017. Rev Ken. |
