On a bright, sunny autumnal day, 5 of us including Rev. Rona travelled over to Newmilns to walk the Lady Flora Walk. We parked near to the Lady Flora Institute. Lady Flora Elizabeth Rawdon-Hastings was a British aristocrat and lady-in- waiting to Queen Victoria’s mother, the Duchess of Kent. Her death in 1839 was the subject of a court scandal that gave the Queen a negative image. (If you watched the ITV serial Victoria, you will know the full story of this!) We started our walk by passing by various old buildings which reminded us of the decline of the lace industry there. We walked along the side of the River Irvine to Galston then up by Loudon Academy. We stopped for our picnic lunch beside the old Loudon Kirk Graveyard. This graveyard served as a burial site for both Loudon’s nobility and locals. Lady Flora Hastings is interred here. It is also includes Thomas Fleming a Covenanter who was killed at the Battle of Drumlog. We followed a country road with lovely views over the countryside. We finished our walk passing by Galston cemetery where the Reverend Dr. Robert Stirling, who was the inventor of the Stirling engine is buried. It was an interesting walk starting in the small burgh of Newmilns which has suffered significantly by the decline of the lace industry passing by Galson before walking through picturesque countryside including views up to Loudon Castle.

Rev Kenneth Yorke held a short Service to dedicate the new Cross which has been fitted to the front of Dalmilling Parish Church.
The new Cross has certainly become a talking point, as it draws attention to the Church Building making it more obvious. Ian Fulton was our Driver for our Outing to The Samye Ling Bhuddist Centre near Lockerbie last Saturday and sported a new hairstyle for the occasion - it might catch on!
We enjoyed some really good weather for the journey and we were able to enjoy some lovely scenery as we travelled through the rolling hills of the Borders on our way to our destination. When we did reach the Samye Ling Centre, we all were pleasantly surprised with what we saw, firstly by the size of the place, the decoration, the numbers of people there, and by the general atmosphere of peace and calm that enveloped the whole Centre. We spent at least a couple of hours there- longer than we thought we would - just enjoying the experience of being somewhere so different and peaceful, before setting off for Moffat where we enjoyed a nice meal together. After a short time looking about, we boarded our bus for our journey home. Everyone agreed it had been an enjoyable outing, with special thanks to our Driver, Ian Fulton, who displayed marvellous coach-handling skills on some very narrow country lanes. |
