Cumbernauld Burns Club visit Auchincruive Church

Members of Cumbernauld Burns Club held their Summer Outing to Irvine Burns Club on Sunday and were invited to make the short trip up the road to visit Auchincruive Church and take a step back in time - with particular interest in the Robert Burns connection.
Revived with a good supply of Pancakes and Shortbread washed down with mugs of hot Tea and Coffee the Cronies were able to catch up on the Church's history from the small exhibition in the Crypt, before exploring the recently re-decorated interior.
There was plenty to see in the Church Yard including the Campbell Mausoleum and the interesting memorial Gravestones.
Auchincruive Member, John Black was on hand to explain the interior layout and gave the Cronies a real insight into what life was like for children in Burns time with examples of various clay drainpipes - complete with tiny hand and finger tip impressions made by children as young as eight years old who had to work in Pipe-works for pennies a week.
It was soon time to board their coach for the return trip to Irvine, but not before Treasurer Tommy McIlroy made a donation on behalf of the Cronies and duly collected in the original Offering 'Ladle' for Church Funds by President Craig McWilton who thanked us for our hospitality on what was a very enjoyable visit.

TESCO Bags of Help Token Scheme

The Sewing Corner has been chosen to go forward to the customer vote in the Tesco Bags of Help token scheme (like the Asda green tokens, but In Tesco’s).

People can vote for us in the big Tesco, by the racecourse and in all the Tesco Express shops in Ayr and Prestwick. The vote will run throughout July and August this year.

The organisation in first place gets £4000, second place £2000, and third place £1000, so we are guaranteed at least the £1000.

This amount of money gives the potential to absolutely transform what The Sewing Corner can do in the community.
Well Done to The Sewing Corner! Let's vote as much as we can for Eileen and her team and give them an even better chance to pass on new and  practical sewing skills to the Dalmilling Community and help make a real difference. Don't forget to vote whenever you can, each one does count -Thank you!

Harry Benson: Exhibition of Photographs

Picture
Ann and I paid a visit to Pollok House in the South of Glasgow yesterday where  the grounds were bathed in wonderful, brilliant sunshine being enjoyed.by Grown-ups and many groups of school - children on a day out.
The real point of our visit was to see an exhibition of world famous Glaswegian Photographer Harry Benson's marvellous thought provoking Photographs displayed in four specially redecorated rooms within Pollok House.
In a career spanning more than 70 years as a News and Portrait Photographer, Harry - a youthful 89 - has been able to capture many great historic moments as they happened in addition to portraits of  the ritch and famous, he has the ability to capture the spirit and humour of ordinary Glasgow Folk.
From American Presidents, the Beatles, Dolly Parton, Protest Marches, Demonstrations, the Assassiination of Bobby Kennedy, Polaris Sailors to holidays in Saltcoats and  Fans on the Terracing, this is a must see exhibition by a genius with a camera- the one and only Harry Benson.
The Exhibition in Pollok House which is a National Trust property runs until December and really is worth a visit.
