Bus Run to Garrion Mill & New Lanark
Despite a rather gloomy Forecast, 18 members and guests climbed aboard the Luxury Coach and set off from Dalmilling Church in cloudy bright conditions for our destination at Garrion Bridges Antiques & Garden Centre on scenic Clydeside.
After a pleasant drive through the Irvine Valley past Loudon Hill,Strathaven and Stonehouse we arrived the Garrion Bridges Antiques & Garden Centre with its vast array of Displays and Individual Stalls selling everything from Aromatics to Zips - far too much to take in in a short visit - you could spend a whole day there and still not see everything! Church members Anne & Tom Houston who had been visiting in the area joined us for a hearty and enjoyable Lunch. After a bit more shopping we made our way in the Coach alongside the River Clyde through the flower be-decked villages of Crossford and Kirkfieldbank before climbing the very steep and twisty Brae, to the County Town of Lanark and wending our way down the other side to the unique and Historical 19th Century Mill Village of New Lanark.
The village was the brainchild and creation of the very forward-thinking Robert Owen who completely revolutionised the treatment and living conditions of the Mill-workers and their families. His Mills were powered by electricity generated from his own Power Station driven by the waters of the River Clyde which had 4 sets of waterfalls all in fairly close proximity. These are known as 'The Falls of Clyde' and have become a tourist attraction in their own right and very popular with Walkers and Naturalists.
We were able to enjoy a gentle walk along the river, have a coffee or visit the Craft Shop before boarding the coach for the return journey just as the rain started and having enjoyed a good day, good food and good company.
