Palm Sunday – the beginning of Holy Week On Palm Sunday, this year Sunday, 29 March, Jesus, consciously and deliberately, chose to enter Jerusalem. He rode on a donkey, as foretold in the Old Testament, in the book of Zechariah, “Look, your king is coming to you! He comes triumphant and victorious, but humble and riding on a donkey – on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” There were loud hosannas and the waving of palm branches, but Jesus rode a donkey, and not a war horse – the way they would expect a king to enter the city. As the week went on the cheers changed to “Crucify him!” “Crucify him”! and although he knew this, Jesus rode on. Barassie was under a blanket of thick cloud at the vital period this morning, so only managed to catch a fleeting glimpse of the action through a wee hole in the cloud and this was the best I could do.
Still an amazing sight! Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving. -Colossians 4:2 Paul writes about prayer constantly in his letters, and he undoubtedly spent a lot of time praying. For Paul the life in Christ begins with prayer. Prayer means making the mind attentive to God; prayer includes gratitude for what's been given. This passage is like Paul's mantra: pray always, pay attention, be grateful. This is crucial to understanding how Paul proceeded in the world. I believe all of us can find great strength in walking the path that Paul has set before us. It's often said that others can tell a lot about us by the company we keep. In prayer, we begin to close the gap between the greatest of these saints and ourselves, we enter their company, and we're blessed to be among them. A Thought How necessary it is to rest! How difficult it can be to rest; especially in our minds. We can lay the body down and even fall asleep, yet the mind is not stilled. We sleep “officially,” but even in dreams and even nightmares,, our agitated souls make their presence felt. The Peace of Love resting must be found. The tumult of the winds and waves of anxiety, must be quickened by the One who eternally says, “Peace, be still!” Then “the winds ceased and there was a great calm.” Denis Duncan There was a good turnout of friends and family in the congregation at Auchincruive Church on Sunday, for the Admission of New Communicants, David Campbell and Tom Dean. Rev.Rona Young welcomed David and Tom into membership of Ayr St.Quivox Parish Church and was delighted that, as residents of the new housing development, they had made a firm and welcome commitment to their local Church. Tea,Coffee, delicious home baking and friendly chat were enjoyed by all at the close of the Service. Welcome on board David and Tom. Pictures by Pat Johnston
Lenten Reflection From the first day of Lent, the Ash Wednesday readings make God's call to us clear: "Return to me with your whole heart" (Joel 2:12). It is an invitation from God to each one of us in a personal, individual way. God invites us to drop the defences that we hold up between ourselves and God. God wants us to realize that our standards, our ways of judging and loving, are very different from God's way, and so much smaller. God loves each one of us not just sometimes but for an entire lifetime, God loves each one of us. "Create in me a clean heart O God," Psalm 51:12 offers. "Give me back the joy of your salvation." That is exactly what our loving God wants to give us, the joy of salvation. This is the invitation of each day of Lent. Today is the day to accept it.
