A Pen from Ken

Spring Flowers at Auchincruive
 A Pen from Ken.
At last we see the hours of daylight increasing. Oh how I dislike these cold, dark, winter nights! Don't think they used to bother me but age brings its own pros and cons I suppose.
The spring flowers are already in bloom in the kirkyard at St Quivox. They make a beautiful, colourful natural carpet around the cold time-worn gravestones.
In a very gentle and beautiful way they remind us that spring will soon be here, warmer, brighter days, something to look forward to.
I think we all need something to look forward to, something to hope for. I must admit that I like the sunshine with the warmth it brings. That isn't something that for me has changed with time! I have always enjoyed sunshine. I suppose most folk do! It is a welcome contrast to winter.
To go back to the graveyard at St Quivox for a moment, the spring flowers in their colourful array contrast deeply with the reminder of death that the gravestones bring. They direct our minds to the promise which Easter brings, a promise of hope and because it is a New Testament promise, a sure and certain hope?
When I was young I used to dread the prospect of death. It was something I just didn't want to think about. After all it wasn't going to happen for a while! When you grow old the prospect stares you firmly in the face just like the cold weathered gravestones at St Quivox.
However the bright spring flowers speak to us of new life in the midst of death. They bring us a reminder that there is for all believers a promise of a new stage of life on our journey.
Jesus said that those who trust in him WILL SHARE in his resurrection life.
So this is a happy time of year. A time to look forward with faith. A time when despite all the setbacks and difficulties of the present time we are assured of a glorious future.
May you all have a very happy Easter and be uplifted in mind and spirit with the wonderful assurance it brings.
